Hello everyone🙋♂
Today we're going to discuss about a somewhat weird topic.
It might be something that you've been confused about for a long time. But God willing , you'll get some explanation today.
***********
Have you ever found yourself unable to move for a few seconds or minutes most often upon falling asleep or waking up? 😱
Not just that! You become unable to do basically anything else! You can't talk, you can't shout or even open your eyes🙆♂
**************
Sometimes, you even hear some strange noise, you perceive some unusual smell or you even see some scary intruder or creature —pressing you atimes (Some Hausas refer to it as Mallam dannau ) 😱 🏃
****************
But what causes these frightening experiences though?🤔
Some people claim that it happens when jinns (evil spirits) press you at night👹.
And your mom🧕🏼 will blame you for not praying before sleeping 😴
Well, now let's see what it really is 👉
****************
It is called sleep paralysis.
And it's neither a disease condition nor a visit by " Malam dannau" (a Hausa superstitious belief) or your village people 😁
It's merely physiological!
-It affects both sexes but it's most common in teenagers 👥
It occurs as one is moving into or out of the deepest part of sleep known as REM( Rapid Eye Movement)
****************
The body is largely disconnected from the brain at this stage of sleep (REM)
Be rest assured that the frightening noises, visions etc are nothing but mere hallucinations— it's your brain's way of playing some trick on you. 🤗
Nevertheless, make sure you always pray before you sleep! This is something you should never forget to do every night 👌
*******************
I hope you've learnt something today. 🙋♂
For those who are interested in more information, here it is.
This is the physiological explanation
Whenever we sleep, certain hormones are released which paralyzes the body. This is to prevent us from moving and hurting ourselves unknowingly while we are dreaming.
Sleep is divided into two basic parts: Non Rapid Eye Movement, NREM and Rapid Eye Movement, REM.
NREM constitutes of the larger part of sleep. One can easily be woken in this state.
REM is the deepest part of sleep, and it happens only for a few minutes when we sleep. It is only during the REM that we dream, have nightmares etc.
Sleep paralysis occurs when there is a problem during transition from Light sleep (NREM) to deep sleep (REM), or vice versa.
We are unable to move because our mind wakes up while the body is still paralyzed (asleep). And since our mind is awake, we can easily experience hallucinations including but not limited to seeing, hearing, smelling or touching things that aren't there.
Thanks for reading.
Please share if you find this beneficial.
